The internet can be a magical place of knowledge and exploration for your kids, but sadly, it also can be a space where bullies have found a new home. Understanding and combating cyberbullying is key in our drive to keep children safe online.
What exactly is cyberbullying? It’s bullying, but in a digital space. Mean comments, spreading rumors, inappropriate images, even fake profiles – it’s all part of the same ugly game. Unlike the bully on the playground who disappears after the school bell, the cyberbully can follow a child right into their bedroom.
How can we recognize the signs that a child is under attack? It’s about observing their behavior. Is there a sudden reluctance to use the smartphone or laptop? Does their online activity suddenly become a secretive operation? Do they become visibly upset after an online session? These could signal that your efforts to keep your child safe online need a boost.
Having figured out what’s happening, how do you prevent cyberbullying or bring it to a stop?
First, you gotta talk. Encourage your child to chat about their online day just like they’d talk about their day at school. Make sure they know they got an ally in you to deal with anything that’s off-kilter in their online world.
Second, turn teacher. Ensure your child knows it’s as crucial to be respectful online as in person, and that it’s never ok to harass or bully anyone online. Teach them to be cyber-literate – to distinguish between the right and the wrong, and to never forward mean messages.
Third, be the guide. Teach them to use privacy settings, how to block a bully, and report them. Pick online platforms designed for their age and safety, to help you keep your child safe online.
Fourth, watch their digital steps. Look at the places they visit online and balance their screen time with lots of real-world activity.
In extreme cases, you might need the school or even law enforcement to step in, especially if the cyberbullying is persistent and heavy-duty. It’s tough, but remember, you’re not alone in this. There are countless others out there facing the same struggle, and help is at hand when you need it.
Keeping a child safe online takes ongoing effort – conversation, education, vigilance. Your child’s safe, positive online experience can contribute vastly to their development in this increasingly digital age.
